Transmission Repair in Pasadena & Hollywood

Slipping, harsh shifts or a shudder does not automatically mean a rebuild. Plenty of transmission complaints turn out to be fluid, a solenoid or a mount.

Diagnosis before anyone says "rebuild"

"You need a new transmission" is the most expensive sentence in this industry, and it gets said far more often than it is true. Slipping, flare-ups between gears and shudder can come from low or burnt fluid, a failing shift solenoid, a bad torque converter, worn mounts, or an engine misfire being felt through the drivetrain. We scan, road-test and inspect before we tell you the number.

Symptoms worth bringing in

  • Engine revs but the car doesn't accelerate. Classic slipping. Get it looked at before it gets worse.
  • Hard, clunky or delayed shifts. Often fluid or solenoid related and frequently fixable without major work.
  • Shudder around 40–50 mph. Commonly a torque converter lockup issue.
  • Clicking when turning. Worn CV joint, usually after a torn boot let the grease out.
  • Red or brown fluid on the driveway. A transmission leak. Cheap to fix now, expensive to ignore.
  • Burnt smell. Overheated fluid. Time-sensitive.

On fluid intervals

Many manufacturers describe transmission fluid as "lifetime fill." In stop-and-go Los Angeles traffic — which is exactly the duty cycle that heats fluid the most — that claim does not hold up well. If you tow, sit in traffic daily, or drive a high-mileage vehicle, ask us to check the fluid's condition. It is a cheap look at an expensive component.

Transmission FAQ

Common Questions

Does a slipping transmission always mean a rebuild?

No. Slipping can come from low or degraded fluid, a failing shift solenoid, a torque converter problem or worn mounts. We diagnose the cause before quoting major work, because the repair and the rebuild are very different bills.

Should I change transmission fluid on a high-mileage car?

It depends on the vehicle and the fluid's condition, and it is worth an actual inspection rather than a rule of thumb. Bring it in and we will check the fluid and tell you honestly whether servicing it is a good idea for your specific transmission.

What does a CV joint failure sound like?

A rhythmic clicking or popping that gets louder when you turn, especially at low speed in a parking lot. It usually follows a torn CV boot that let the grease escape and dirt in. Replacing the boot early is far cheaper than replacing the axle.

My transmission fluid is leaking. How urgent is it?

Urgent enough to schedule promptly. Running a transmission low on fluid causes overheating and internal damage that turns a seal repair into a rebuild. Get the leak identified while it is still just a leak.

Do you rebuild transmissions in-house?

Call the Pasadena or Hollywood shop with your year, make and model and we will tell you exactly what we can handle in-house and what we would refer out. We would rather be straight with you than take on work that belongs somewhere else.
